I was surprised after reading the first and only review gave this machine 3 stars.... This is a five star machine. I did A LOT of homework before getting this computer. If you read the reviews of similar models that simply have smaller hard drives and slower processors, you will get the jist of just how solid this laptop is.

I am not going to go into a lot of detail, but if you go into the purchase understanding that this laptop does not have bluetooth (not an issue for me at all), then you will love it!

I got this for my daughter for an early graduation present and to take on to college next fall. She wanted a laptop that had longer battery life than MOST computers. It does! You will not find a model with these specs, for this price with longer battery life. You will have to get a smaller screen size to do that. She wanted it large enough to watch a movie or tv show via the internet from time to time (plus it has the HDMI out to hook to TV). She wanted a hard drive large enough to hold all her pics and songs. We put everything on there already (tons of pics and about 1500 songs) and it still has 528 GB left! If you need a computer with more storage, you should GET AN EXTERNAL DRIVE! Geez! You can get 2 TB drive for less than $100 at Newegg.

And I would like to add that NO hard drive is going to yeild the space that is advertised because of two main factors- 1) It is measured differently by the operating system vs. the manufacturers (about 7% less)- which is true of of all hard drives! Of course this disparity becomes more apparent the larger the hard drive (7% of 640 is almost 45 GB!).
2) Hey folks! There is a thing called the OPERATING SYSTEM that uses some space. And sometimes there is a separately partitioned drive (d:) that is embedded within the c: drive used for system restore. Yes, it may come to a surprise to some, but the operating system does take up some space! So no, this laptop will not have 640 GB of free hard drive space when you boot it up for the first time, but seriously, many are trashing it for this reason when they are simply ignorant of why.

Also attractive about this computer is the processor- a Core i5. This computer is twice as fast as my Gateway NV52 that I am typing on right now. It has twice the hard drive space of my Gateway. It has at least thrice (that means three times!) the battery life of the Gateway. Sure, you may not get 8 hours, but that was the official measurement using the MobileMark 2007 Productivity test, which is what most use by the way. Like ALL the battery life ratings out there, take it with a grain of salt because they are ALL stretching the truth.

It is also lighter than my 2 year old Gateway, however it seems more solidly built. And the Acer was just a little bit more than Gateway I bought less than two years ago. This is the nature of electronic/computers though. I got a good price on the Acer for my daughter though- [..] and free shipping from B&H. I suspect more retailers will sell it for around that price for the pre-graduation sales soon.

Again, I doubt you will do any better for the price than this laptop, but more power to you if you do!

i got this computer on the day the super-bowl was on. and i'm glad i got this laptop. its FRIKIN AWESOME!!

the keyboard is nice, the touch pad i didn't use(i would buy a wireless mouse if i were you) and the sound on it aren't bad.
what i hate about this computer is that its hard to push stuff into the usb ports(theres a certain way you have to push your stuff into the usb ports.)

its a nice fast computer with 5oo gb, 4 gb of memory, hd graphics, its great. it can last for 4 hrs (depending what your using your computer for.) and even better, it has Intel. good company, and i love how fast the internet is on this thing.
so if your looking for a computer to do your school work on, games, and movies, then i would recommend this computer.

Cons: have run it near constantly for a month playing games and surfing with no problems yet so it may have none :)

When I told people I was going to buy an ACER there were lots of rolling eyes. "Dude get a proper computer.." is what I heard a lot. For the price it was hard to resist though so I took the plunge.

I was attracted to this laptop by the dedicated graphics card so I could play fs2004. I was watching other sites for the best deal but amazon had a brief sale on this computer so I jumped on it.

Overall I was very impressed with the capabilities of this machine. It starts up nice and quick (especially after you delete all the 'bloatware') and seems to run smoothly even if it is Vista. I don't think I would expect to play Crysis on this thing but Half Life 2 was great. Photoshop runs with no problems. Lots of slots for usb, firewire, etc.

If given another chance I would buy this again since you can't go wrong for the price. From what I've heard ACER's product support is abysmal so I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Pros...Excellent value, dedicated graphics, dual-core, good battery

Cons...No display driver for XP, twitchy touchpad, supposedly bad support, glossy case easily marred by fingerprints, glossy monitor (prefer flat)

Acer Aspire 5720-4649 15.4-inch Laptop (1.46 GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core T2310 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium)

Looked at this unit in my local office supply store until it finally went on sale for $499 a couple weeks ago. Vista didn't thrill me but my old IBM's hard drive bit the dust and it was either buy a new $200 hard drive for an old computer or cough up another $300 and just get a new computer.

Got home with my prize and saw my first warning that things weren't going to go well. Acer put a note on top stating Vista would take at least 30 minutes to boot and set up.

Guess what, it tooks less than 10! Unlike XP, Vista even figured out what time zone I was in and properly set the time and date without asking. As usual, Microsoft had about 2 GB worth of updates waiting for me, but I got used to that with XP.

I used the computer for about 2 hours installing all my old programs and even my old printer. Vista didn't even blink and even took the time to located my Samsung printer driver from the internet (allegedly a printer that could never be used with Vista).

On the pro side:

* It never gets hot. Not even warm.
* The screen is crisp and displays graphics with vivid colors.
* It's built like tank. Not a creak or groan anywhere.
* Colored plastic casing is a nice break from the gray or black bricks I've been used to.
* Wireless sucks in signals I didn't know existed.
* The webcam not only works, it works better than my current 7 MP digital camera. Crisp, clear pictures. Guess I had better start combing my hair when I sit in from for video chats.
* Solid keyboard. Comparable to most IBM Thinkpads although the board itself isn't spillproof.
* Limited bloatware. Cripes, my new Fujitsu came with so much junk ("Free Software!" offers) that I had to spend an hour to get rid of it. This one was nice enough to warn me that Norton Anti Virus was about to be installed unless I chose otherwise. I chose otherwise and deleted it.
* CD/DVD burner works as it should with little fanfare or excess noise (in fact, it'll spin sometimes and you'll have to listen for it or you may think it's not working)
* Vista is not as bad as people say. The bad Vista version is the Basic setup or the upgrades. Many complaints are from people who attempted to use a new O/S on a computer that originally came with Windows ME. Avoid Basic, even on a new computer. It's worthless.
* Customer service seems good so far. I sent an email about the power brick and actually got an uncanned response while still on the internet (about a half hour later).

Cons include:

* Irritating wireless light on the keyboard flashes to advise you you're connected. No way of turning it off.
* Keyboard is solid but unforgiving. Miskeying can result in deleted work (FN key too close to CTRL key)
* Computer stays cool but the power brick can cook pizza at close range. I contacted Acer and they are looking into the problem that has been reported. Not a danger, but it does get too warm for my liking.
* Battery power really sucks at roughly 2 hours of wireless internet surfing. Better than my new Fujitsu, though (it gets less than 1.5 hours).
* Quirky, unmarked touchpad. You can accidentally start scrolling and highlighting text to delete if you don't watch out. While typing it will very rarely catch a glimpse of my wrist movement and move the cursor.
* Portable? Maybe, with the battery removed. It tips the scales at about 6 pounds with the battery installed.
* Really nice gloss black cover is a covert fingerprint magnet. Makes a nice mirror in a pinch, though.
* No card slots. That's reserved for the more expensive units. No great loss, but it's nice to have sometimes.

Overall, a very good unit for the price. Much cheaper than the competition and most reviews are positive so far.

By the way, make sure you get the version with the 2 GB of RAM and at least the Pentium Dual Core or Turion processor. The Celeron processor is a waste of time and quite often is packed with no more than 512 MB RAM.
